Is Vice City in GTA 6?
Yes. Vice City is the principal city of Leonida and the first mainline return since the 2002 game. Its districts, its period and its extent are all unstated.
Confirmed. Source: Rockstar Games Trailer 1, 4 Dec 2023. Checked .
That is the whole of the good news, and it is worth being precise about how little else follows from it. Rockstar has said the game returns to Vice City. It has not named a district of that city, has not said what year it is, and has not said whether it shares a single street with the game of the same name from 2002.
Almost every description of the modern Vice City in circulation is a description of something nobody has published. The three questions readers arrive with — which districts, which period, and whether it is the city of 2002 — are all open, and have been since the first trailer.
What the city is part of
The game is set in the fictional US state of Leonida. Confirmed. PlayStation.Blog (Rockstar-authored), .
Vice City is one place inside that state rather than the whole of the game, which is the first thing most coverage gets slightly wrong. Rockstar describes Leonida as home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond, and the material published since has spent far more of its attention on the beyond than on the city.
Rockstar published around 70 screenshots and new character and location pages alongside Trailer 2. Confirmed. GTABase, .
Those location pages are the whole of the official geography of this game, and every entry in them is a place in the state: an archipelago, a wetland, a forgotten coast, a heart and a national park. Their names, one by one and with the source for each, are on the state of Leonida.
Which districts are in it?
No district, neighborhood or street of Vice City has been named in any first-party Grand Theft Auto VI material. The five places named on the location pages are regions of the state, not parts of the city. Not known. Open since ; statements to cite: Five place names on Rockstar's location pages, and every one of them is a region of the state rather than a part of the city. Would settle it: any first-party material naming a district, neighbourhood or street of Vice City — a location page, a storefront description, a caption on a screenshot. Absence of any first-party statement.
A district of Vice City would have belonged on those pages. Rockstar built a page for each named place and gave each of them a phrase; if the intention had been to describe the city by its parts, that was the occasion to do it, and it was not taken.
The scale of the material is worth restating here, because it is what makes the absence meaningful rather than merely early. One drop, in May 2025, is the largest body of official imagery that exists for this game, and fifteen months later nothing has been added to it. Every district name you have read for the modern Vice City was supplied by somebody outside Rockstar.
Is it the same city as 2002?
Rockstar has never described how Grand Theft Auto VI’s Vice City relates to the city in the 2002 game — no shared geography, no returning landmark and no continuity between the two maps has been stated. Not known. Open since ; statements to cite: That the game returns to Vice City. Nothing about what returns with it. Would settle it: Rockstar naming a returning landmark, describing shared geography, or stating that the two are the same place at a different time. Absence of any first-party statement.
This is the question most readers arrive with, and the honest answer is that nobody outside Rockstar can answer it. The company has said the game returns to Vice City. It has not said whether the city shares any geography with the 2002 game of the same name, whether any landmark is reproduced, or whether the two are meant to be the same place at all.
“Returns to Vice City” is a statement about a name and a setting. It is read, almost universally, as a statement about a map. Those are different claims and only one of them has been made.
What year is it set in?
The year, decade or period Grand Theft Auto VI is set in has never been stated. Not known. Open since ; statements to cite: None. No year, no decade, no period, in any first-party material. Would settle it: a date or period stated by Rockstar, or a dated document shown in the game’s own published material. Absence of any first-party statement.
Readers reasonably infer a contemporary setting from what the trailers show — the phones, the cars, the way people film each other. That is a reading of footage, and a good reading of footage is still a reading rather than an announcement.
How much of the state is city
The size of the map has never been stated. Not known. Open since ; statements to cite: none. Would settle it: a figure in square miles or square kilometres from Rockstar, or one printed on a storefront listing. Absence of any first-party statement.
Not narrowly unknown, either: there is no figure at all. Rockstar has published no square mileage for Leonida, no square mileage for Vice City, and no comparison against the map of any earlier game. Where the circulating numbers come from is set out in full on how big is the map.
The same gap swallows the follow-up question. Because there is no published area for either the state or the city, there is no ratio between them to report, and any statement that Vice City occupies some fraction of Leonida is arithmetic performed on two numbers that do not exist. Six of the seven named places in the state are not the city, and Rockstar describes the state as home to Vice City and beyond. That is a shape, not a share.
One figure travels further than any other claim
The widely repeated figure of "700+ enterable buildings" has no first-party source. Rumoured. Circulated by fan and aggregator sites, .
It is worth being precise about what is wrong with it. The problem is not that the number is implausible — it may well turn out to be close. The problem is that it is presented as a specification when no specification has been published, and nothing about the way it is written tells a reader that Rockstar never said it.
No complete map of Leonida or of Vice City has ever been released either, so every full map image in circulation is a reconstruction assembled from trailer frames — or material of unestablished origin.
On 18 August 2026 a group calling itself CyberLeek posted material it claimed came from Grand Theft Auto VI, including footage and an image said to be the Leonida map. Rumoured. GameSpot, .
What that material is and is not worth is set out on the August 2026 leaks. A takedown notice is evidence that a rights holder objects to something. It is not evidence that the something is genuine, and it is certainly not a map of Vice City.
Which real city it is taken to be
Leonida is understood to be modelled on Florida, but Rockstar has never said so. Rumoured. Wikipedia (Grand Theft Auto VI), .
Vice City is read as Miami by nearly everybody who writes about it, and the reading may well be right. It is still a reading: no real place has ever been named by Rockstar as a source for anything in Leonida. That question, place by place, is handled at real-world counterparts — and it is a question of identification rather than of confirmation, because no list of the places drawn from has ever been published.
Until one of those absences is filled, the position is the one at the top: the city is in the game, and not one street of it has a name.
