What is the GTA 6 story about?
An easy score goes wrong and the two leads are caught in a conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida. That paragraph is the whole of the published plot.
Confirmed. Source: Rockstar Games synopsis published with Trailer 2 (via GTABase), 6 May 2025. Checked .
Rockstar has published one paragraph of plot. The summaries in circulation run to thousands of words, and the gap between the two is filled with readings of two trailers and with material taken out of the studio. This page prints the first-party sentences, so you can count them.
The premise, and who it is about
Rockstar's official premise: an easy score goes wrong and the pair are caught in a conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida. Confirmed. Rockstar Games synopsis published with Trailer 2 (via GTABase), .
That is the plot in full as far as anything first-party goes: two names, one job that goes wrong, and a conspiracy the size of a state.
Grand Theft Auto VI has two playable protagonists, Jason and Lucia. Confirmed. Take-Two Interactive press release, .
Lucia's full name is Lucia Caminos. Confirmed. Rockstar Games material published with Trailer 2 (via GTABase), .
Jason's full name is Jason Duval. Confirmed. Rockstar Games material published with Trailer 2 (via GTABase), .
Lucia is the first female playable protagonist in a mainline Grand Theft Auto game. Confirmed. Wikipedia (Grand Theft Auto VI), .
Both names arrived with the Trailer 2 material. Who the two of them are, as people, is on Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval — this page is the plot, those are the people.
Rockstar has named six supporting characters: Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Dre'Quan Priest, the rap duo Real Dimez (Bae-Luxe and Roxy), Raul Bautista and Brian Heder. Confirmed. Rockstar Games character bios published with Trailer 2 (via GTABase), .
Each of the six has a short bio and no stated role in the story. A name outside that list did not come from Rockstar, and the characters index sets out why that test works.
Grand Theft Auto VI is the first mainline GTA since the 1997 original not written by Dan Houser, who left Rockstar in 2020. Confirmed. Wikipedia (Grand Theft Auto VI), .
That is the clearest structural difference between this game and the last one, and the one most often missed in an argument about the setting.
Where it is set
The game is set in the fictional US state of Leonida. Confirmed. PlayStation.Blog (Rockstar-authored), .
Vice City returns as the game's principal city. Confirmed. Rockstar Games Trailer 1, .
A state, not a city. Five further regions have been named in official material, each carrying a single line of description and nothing else behind it.
Leonida Keys is an officially named location, described by Rockstar as a tropical archipelago. Confirmed. Rockstar Games material published with Trailer 2 (via GTABase), .
Grassrivers is an officially named location, described as a primordial wetland expanse. Confirmed. Rockstar Games material published with Trailer 2 (via GTABase), .
Port Gellhorn is an officially named location, described as Leonida's forgotten coast. Confirmed. Rockstar Games material published with Trailer 2 (via GTABase), .
Ambrosia is an officially named location, described as the heart of Leonida. Confirmed. Rockstar Games material published with Trailer 2 (via GTABase), .
Mount Kalaga National Park is an officially named location. Confirmed. Rockstar Games material published with Trailer 2 (via GTABase), .
Where those places sit in relation to each other, and how much ground lies between them, has never been published — see the state of Leonida, real-world counterparts and how big is the map.
Leonida is understood to be modelled on Florida, but Rockstar has never said so. Rumoured. Wikipedia (Grand Theft Auto VI), .
The one thing almost universally assumed about the setting is, strictly, an inference. It is recorded here as rumoured, which is what it is.
What has not been said about the story
Rockstar has named no antagonist and described no event in the story beyond the opening premise. Not known. Open since ; statements to cite: one paragraph of synopsis, published 6 May 2025. Would settle it: a Rockstar synopsis, character page or showing that names an antagonist or describes an event. Absence of any first-party statement.
Between them the two trailers establish a geography, a tone, a cast of faces and two licensed songs — which are trailer music and not necessarily the game's music, a distinction followed on soundtrack and radio. They do not establish a plot.
Trailer 1 was released on 4 December 2023. Confirmed. The Washington Post, .
Trailer 2 was released on 6 May 2025, four days after the first delay. Confirmed. GTABase, .
Rockstar published around 70 screenshots and new character and location pages alongside Trailer 2. Confirmed. GTABase, .
Rockstar states Trailer 2 was captured entirely in-game on PlayStation 5. Confirmed. GTABase (quoting Rockstar's trailer notes), .
Captured in-game means the footage was rendered by the game rather than assembled by a film studio. It does not mean it is a scene you will play, in that order, with that outcome. A trailer is cut to sell a mood, and a shot of two people in a car is not evidence about what happens to them. The shot-by-shot notes are on Trailer 2.
Rockstar has not stated what year or era Grand Theft Auto VI is set in. Not known. Open since ; statements to cite: none — no year and no period appears in any first-party material. Would settle it: a date, a year or a named period in a Rockstar synopsis, bio or location page. Absence of any first-party statement.
The trailers read as present-day, and reading a trailer is not a source. The Trailer 2 drop is the largest release of official story material so far — a synopsis, character bios and location pages — and it names no year and no period. Nothing published since has either.
Nothing has been said about campaign length, mission count, or how the two protagonists are switched between. Not known. Open since ; statements to cite: none. Absence of any first-party statement.
Whether you switch between Jason and Lucia freely, whether they are ever separated, whether the story branches: none of it has been described by anybody who would know.
Rockstar describes the Ultimate Edition as adding "an exclusive collection of premium vehicles, weapons, apparel, and action threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia's story". Confirmed. Take-Two Interactive press release, .
That is the one piece of first-party wording pointing at a single shared story, and it is a marketing line rather than a design statement — content threaded across "Jason and Lucia's story", singular. Treat it as a hint, not as a confirmation. How long any of it takes to play is on how long the game is.
Rockstar has not named a single voice actor. Not known. Open since ; statements to cite: none — not one actor has been named by Rockstar. Would settle it: a Rockstar credit list, or a performer confirming a part with Rockstar’s agreement. PCGamesN.
Manni L. Perez is widely believed by fans to voice Lucia, on resemblance and interview hints alone. Rumoured. PCGamesN, .
Plot detail attributed to unverified sources
A great deal of plot summary exists that Rockstar did not write, and almost all of it descends from two events.
On 18 September 2022 a hacker posted about 90 videos of work-in-progress GTA VI footage, roughly 50 minutes of material, to GTAForums. Confirmed. Axios, .
On 18 August 2026 a group calling itself CyberLeek posted material it claimed came from Grand Theft Auto VI, including footage and an image said to be the Leonida map. Rumoured. GameSpot, .
Rockstar has issued no public statement about the August 2026 leak. Confirmed. Den of Geek, .
The practical rule for a reader who wants to avoid spoilers: an unattributed plot beat is not a spoiler, because it may not be true. Work-in-progress material describes a game that was still being written, in a build made years before a release that has since moved twice. The reading of the recent material is on the August 2026 leaks, and the plot claims first-party material has since contradicted are on debunked claims.
What would count as new story information
On 27 August 2026 four things would qualify: a named antagonist, a stated era, a description of how the two protagonists are handled, or any statement about how the campaign is structured. More footage of Leonida would not, however much of it there is — the published plot would stand exactly where it stands today.
The showing itself is covered on the Extended Look, the people are on the characters index, and the length question is on how long GTA 6 is.
